Amie Boal joins PSU Faculty
Amie Boal is an assistant professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and of Chemistry. Her research interests focus on problems at the interfaces of inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology. She uses structural biology and biochemistry approaches to understand how transition metal reactivity is controlled by protein structure and how essential metal ions are acquired and mobilized in microorganisms. The overarching goal of her research program is to be able to manipulate how metals are used in a given organism, either to control microbial growth for therapeutic purposes or to facilitate new chemistry in biotechnology applications. Before joining the faculty at Penn State, Boal was a postdoctoral scholar at Northwestern University. She earned a Ph.D. degree at the California Institute of Technology in 2008 and completed an undergraduate degree at Pomona College in 2002. Boal’s awards and honors include the Herbert Newby McCoy award from the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Caltech and an NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award.
