The Department of Chemistry at Penn State has more than 5,500 alumni, many of whom have successful careers in academia and industry. Our alumni and friends play an increasingly important role in supporting the department's initiatives in areas that will make significant positive contributions to our society.

Our department has become one of the best chemistry programs in the country with the help of our generous alumni and friends, having been nationally ranked as a top 20 program in basic research and graduate education for many years. However, we’re not settling there! We are poised to enlarge our current, successful programs in materials, energy research and environmental chemistry. These enhancements will require new faculty members and more graduate students, and our hope is to create new endowed faculty positions in chemistry and new graduate fellowships. These new resources will enable us to recruit and retain the talented scientists needed to implement an ambitious expansion of our research program.

There are many ways you can help to make our programs even better!

  • Help us recruit! You know what it takes to succeed in our programs, now help us find graduate students who will also excel in the classroom and research labs. Recruiting for our graduate program is a high priority, so if you are in academics or working with student interns in an industrial laboratory, please let them know about the exciting research program at University Park.
  • Invest time! Time is another generous offering that will benefit our students. Interested in mentoring students? Want to host a student for a job shadowing experience? Have an internship/externship or co-op position available? Contact Tomalei Vess, Director, Science Engagement, at or (814) 863-8003.
  • Make a gift! We welcome your support in the form of a gift to either a directed fund or a general gift to the department. Our college's Development Office will match you with programs that connect to your interests and passions. In addition to supporting research and graduate education, your gift is important to our undergraduate program. If you wish to direct a gift to the chemistry department, please contact Joyce Matthews, Senior Director of Development, at or (814) 863-8454.

We are fortunate to have committed alumni to help the department prepare our students to be as successful as they are and appreciate all of the alumni contributions that  have made our programs better.

Thank you!
